The Never-ending Laundry Pile

Happy Monday!  Today's topic?  Laundry.  We all have it, most of us hate it, and I'm on the hunt for a solution.

Wait... does anyone actually like doing laundry?  I'm serious.  I would like to meet someone who does because I want to know why.

No matter how much I try, I just can't stand it!

I will say this, though.  Part of me enjoys piling the dirty laundry into the washer.  I think it's because I want it out of the baskets and off the floor.

If only it ended there and the laundry fairy did everything else.  Oy.

I am the sole laundry-doer in my house... by choice.  My son likes to help me sort the dirty pile and put it in the washer or transfer it from the washer to the dryer, but it stops there.  And there is no way I'm letting my husband do the laundry.  No way, no how.  There are too many clothes to be ruined if he was in charge.

Oh, yeah, and there's the fact that I'm a control freak.

(Seriously, though, I don't trust him with the clothes.  He is, however, a champ when it comes to folding.  He doesn't mind it all that much and he's actually pretty good at it, so I try to pass that job along to him as much as possible!)

I've also recently decided not to put his laundry away.  He's a big boy; he can handle it.  If he chooses to leave it on his dresser all week, then so be it.  I used to put it away, but when I saw that his drawers basically became holding areas for balled up clothes, I was like, um... no.  I'm not taking the time to do the laundry, fold it nicely and put it in the drawers, only to have him crumble it all up when looking for a shirt.  So this has cut a bit of time out of my laundry system.

I'm working on teaching my son to help put his clothes away, but attention span and patience are not his good qualities.  We're working on it!

One of the things that confuses me about our laundry, though, is how much of it we have.  We are a family of three.  How can we possibly have so much?

I think of families who have more than one child and wonder how they get it all done.  Between my husband's workout clothes, our bath towels, our pool towels, our sheets, our kitchen towels and rags, our daily outfits, and our PJs -- I swear -- there is always laundry to be done.

I think I have such a problem with laundry because I am the type of person who likes to do a task and finish it.  I enjoy the satisfaction of it being done, and laundry is one of those ongoing things that really has no start or end to it.

A long time ago, I remember seeing this woman on Oprah who was OCD when it came to her laundry.  She was so crazy about having everything clean at once that she would even wash the clothes she was wearing and would walk around the house naked until it was all done.  That's a little extreme.

And gross.

I guess I just always feel like I'm looking for a simple solution to at least keep the laundry at bay.  I don't have any sort of system in place; I just do it when the baskets are full or when the towels have been used several times.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Here's wishing you a good week!

  1. UGH, laundry. I am the sole launderer too, not by choice. But I won't let Michael touch my clothes anyway. I just want him to do his own every once in a while haha. I also don't put his clothes away. But I always have to put the shared things (towels, etc.) away. Seriously, if I say, "Can you put this away?" he'll say, "I don't know where it goes." How don't you know where our towels go?! Oy. I put it off until one or both of us is running out of underwear. Ha!

    1. I swear - men act dumb sometimes to get out of doing chores!!!!! So frustrating. Sometimes I'll tell my husband to just switch a load over from the washer to dryer, and he "forgets." Riiiiight.
Hope you have a good week!

  2. Ah laundry. Call me sick/demented... I don't mind it - growing up I was always helping my mom with it so it's a part of me/my life. There are 3 of us - 2 humans and 1 golden retriever. Yes, she can generate some laundry too - LOL. Hubby will do it if I ask, but then he hangs and folds things oddly, so I prefer to do it. I cannot tell you what a hanging conglomeration I came home to after he did his color laundry after his trip! There are usually 3 main loads a week - towels, colors, and underwear/socks. Then there are the sheets every other week, and the "leftovers" load on occasion. Always do a full load - water conservation. I do both air and dryer drying. And ironing once a month. I've learned NOT to iron his dri-fit shirts - OOPS. And - this is one of my oddities - I time myself to see how fast I can dry and put away the clean clothes. I TOLD YOU I WAS SICK!

Now, quit rolling your eyes at me, you will hurt yourself. Have a great week!

    2. Oh, Laurie -- you gave me a good chuckle! Maybe I need to make putting it all away a contest between me, my husband, and son. That would make it go faster!! :-)

  3. I HATE laundry. I also apparently forgot how much laundry a newborn generates... seriously, since we got home I've had to do a load a day (thank you little man) and I absolutely cannot keep on top of folding it an putting it away... so, basically, there are baskets of clean laundry everywhere. Life is awesome.

    1. Shaunacey, you have the best excuse in the world to be behind -- a newborn! I get what you're saying, though... I remember my son going through, like, 10 outfits a day b/c his poop would come out of the sides of his diaper. Sorry -- TMI. But true.
      Blessings to you!

    1. Wow, Tracy! You are definitely a busy mom, too! I like your idea... my only complaint is that I HATE LAUNDRY SO MUCH that I don't know if I could handle doing it that much! I know it probably does help, but I know I would get soooo behind because I would just procrastinate, procrastinate, procrastinate! Hey, whatever works for you, though, right? :-)
      Thanks for stopping by!
