Living with Men

I live with all males:

     My husband.
     My son.
     My dog.

It's hard being the only woman sometimes.

No, all the time.

Here is a snippet of my life with men:

1)  The toilet seat is constantly dirty.  CON. STANT. LY.  Both the underneath part and the part you sit on.  Basically the whole thing.  I don't understand.  When you have something to aim with, how do you still miss the toilet bowl?  HOW?  TELL ME!!!  It's so frustrating to wake up in the middle of the night, stumble in the bathroom, and sit in someone else's pee.  Is that disgusting or what?!  I AM TIRED OF IT.  I have to check the toilet seat every time I go to the bathroom before I sit down.  That's ridiculous.  I keep a bottle of Lysol and a roll of paper towels in our bathrooms at all times.

2)  How come when I ask my husband to take out the garbage, he doesn't equate that to putting a new bag in the can?  It never fails -- I ask him to take the garbage out and then I go to throw something away, only to find that it drops in the bottom of the can... and, unfortunately for me, it's usually something liquid-y.  To me, the two tasks go hand-in-hand.  Take out the garbage; put a new bag in.  Done.  But, to men, you have to ask for each task to be done because they don't realize that it all goes together.  I will never understand.

3)  The bathroom sinks have become my nemesis.  There are always, always, always remnants of toothpaste in there, and sometimes even nail clippings.  Gross, I know.  And I swear -- every time I clean the bathroom, my husband decides it's time to shave and get his hair everywhere.  I even test him sometimes.  For instance, once I decided I was absolutely NOT going to clean the bathroom sink -- NO MATTER WHAT.  I was going to let it get as disgusting and dirty as it could to see how long it took him to take care of it.  It was so hard!  Every time I looked at it, I shuttered.  It seriously got so bad after a few days and I gave in.  I just couldn't take it anymore.

4)  Why is it that dirty clothes never make it to the hamper?  My son and husband are both guilty of this.  My son plays basketball with his dirty clothes, but if they don't make it in the hamper, then they don't make it in.  My husband, on the other hand, just leaves piles of clothes around our bedroom.  Those I DO NOT pick up.  I refuse.  I don't mind doing some things around the house, but I am not his maid.

5)  I have a thing about clutter on my kitchen counters.  Basically I hate it.  And it never fails... as soon as we get home from somewhere, the kitchen counter becomes the "drop spot" for the boys' stuff -- hats, keys, wallet, cell phone, papers, sunglasses, Legos, you name it.  Drives me nuts.  I have tried multiple solutions for this, but clearly none of them have stuck.

6)  It's exhausting having conversations with my son about "body parts," if you get my drift.  He wants to know all about them and is very curious about human anatomy.  I'll leave it at that for now.

7)  How is it that males can look directly at you and still not hear what you say?  I understand if the TV is on or something -- that's old news by now -- but it's starting to happen even when it looks like they are attentive.

Well, now that I've just complained about the men in my life, I have to tell you how wonderful they are, too.

1)  They are loving.
2)  They are kind.
3)  They are honest.
4)  They are caring.
5)  They are fun.
6)  They are funny.
7)  They are sweet.
8)  They are tough.
9)  They are everything.
10)  They are worth it.

All of their good traits make up for the others.  Don't you think?

I'm headed to the BlogHer conference in NYC tomorrow and will be gone until Sunday, so I won't be able to post until next week due to traveling and a busy conference agenda.  (You know, I'll be exhausted from hanging with Gwyneth and Boyz II Men.)  However, I'll be sure to take pictures and notes to share with you.

Have a wonderful rest of the week and an even better weekend!  Hope you stop back here next week.  Oh, and if you ever get the chance to see Idina live, DO IT.  She was awesome!!

  1. I only live with one man and he is SO MESSY. We're both dying to buy a house, but I constantly tell him, "I'm not buying a house with you until you learn to clean up after yourself." At this rate, we'll be in apartments forever. Have so much fun at BlogHer! Can't wait to hear about it!
